Diary activities are a great way to better understand consumer behaviors. The common theme of diary activities is that they are asked repeatedly over a set period of time.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a usage diary. The concepts learned here apply to other types of diary activities as well.
1: Creating a Diary Activity
To create your first activity, either click the Create the first Activity button or select New Activity > Activity from the dropdown menu.
2: Adjusting the settings of the activity
The name of the activity will be seen by the participants, so it should be descriptive. This example uses the text “Usage Diary (Food Moments Photo Journal)”.
The activity kind is set as a Recurring Activity as diary activities should be asked multiple times.
Change the activity type to Mobile if you want your participants to be able to complete the activity on both their mobile devices and their desktop devices.
Keep sharing to Private so that responses are not influenced.
Set the "Overdue Notice after" to 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, 1 week, 1 month, Never, or Custom. After an activity has been available to a participant and not submitted for the selected time period, an overdue notification will be sent. It will also appear overdue in a participant's To-Do list. If Never is selected, no overdue notifications will be sent for the activity. If Custom is selected, participants receive an overdue notice, based on participant time zone, on the date and time that you choose.
3: Adding the activity content
In this example, the diary activity asks participants to share pictures of the food they eat and gathers feedback about the context in which the food was eaten.
To add a Stimuli or a Collector to the activity, drag and drop it across the canvas.
Add an Instructional Text stimuli to the canvas.
Add instructional text to explain to the participant what information they need to provide for the diary.
-
Add the rest of the elements to the activity in the same manner. This example asks participants to:
Provide a photo using the Request Photo collector.
Specify what is in the photo using a Single Choice question.
Elaborate on the uploaded photo using a Paragraph Text collector.
Provide instructions in the collectors by clicking where indicated on the element. For Single Choice questions, insert the answer options by clicking edit options.
Feel free to experiment with the types of elements you use in your own diary activity.
4: Saving & Previewing your activity
After the collector and stimuli elements are added, be sure to Preview it.
In the preview window, check for errors.
If everything looks good, Save & Close your activity.
